Choosing a Domain Name
OK, you’ve done your research, you are confident that you might be able to turn a profit with your online store, so now you need to choose a domain name suitable for your online shop.

Stop, pause here, and think...
From an internet marketing perspective your chosen domain name should ideally contain a 'hint' about what your online store is selling rather than your trading/business name. A domain name that contains a product sales message will help your placement in the search engines. For example, if you are setting up as an online plumbers merchant then try to incorporate 'plumber' 'plumbers' or 'plumbers merchant' into the domain name, rather than XYZ supplies for example because it will help with Google search results when someone types 'plumbers' into the search box.

A plumbers merchant might register the domain name somecityonlineplumbersmerchant.com for example, and having a name like this would help to return reasonable results in Google for the phrases 'plumber', 'plumbers', 'plumber merchant' etc etc.

SEO
You might have heard the expression SEO or Search Engine Optimization being bandied around, well what I have described above is a small part of that process. Having words in the domain name that say something about what you sell is used by Google when displaying the URL shown in the returned search results, and contributes around 5% of how much "weight" your website carries in those results.

My advice is.. unless you are advertising your online store on the radio or by word of mouth, then don't be too concerned about choosing a long domain name, there are not many short ones left anyway.

It's worth remembering that there isn't a problem having more than one domain name for your business, many successful online shops have dozens of domain names acting as 'doorways' to their main sales website.

What’s the next step?

  • You first want to register your domain name, so no-one else gets it.
Domain names are being registered by the thousands every day, and if you find one available to suit your business, then grab it before someone else does!
